The family of Casey Christopher Goodson Jr. has demanded that authorities do a thorough investigation into the shooting of the 23-year-old Black man who was gunned down by police in Columbus, Ohio. Accounts of Goodson Jr.'s death conflict at key points.
Local officers initially stated that they were responding to a shooting in the area when Goodson Jr. rode by in a vehicle waving a gun. When they confronted him, officers say he attempted to exit the vehicle and he was shot shortly thereafter. However, members of his family contradict that account.
"The deputy was investigating the situation and there are reports of a verbal exchange. The deputy fired at Mr. Casey Goodson, resulting in his death," the Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy stated.
"A gun was recovered from Mr. Goodson. Mr. Goodson was not the person being sought by the U.S. Marshals task force."
Members of the Goodson family say that that the 23-year-old did not have a criminal record. They added that the young, Columbus resident was shot through the screen door as he entered his home.
“It doesn’t make sense,” Goodman family attorney Sean Walton stated.
“Who drives down the street waving a gun out of the window? This isn’t a music video. This is real life.”
Members of his family added that Casey Goodson Jr. parked his car, walked across the yard and was entering the house through the side door. Also, Walton was licensed to carry a concealed weapon "and Ohio does not prohibit the open carrying of firearms."
“There’s no reason or justification for why any of this happened,” Walton said.
“He fell and died in his own kitchen.”
