Vice President Kamala Harris Comments On The Death Of Daunte Wright

It has only been a few days since former Brooklyn Center Police Department Officer Kim Potter shot and killed 20-year-old Daunte Wright during a traffic stop. In the days following his untimely death, former President Barack Obama, four-time NBA Champion LeBron James and several others have voiced their support for the Wright family and expressed their frustration with the state of policing in American society. Joining the all important conversation regarding racism, police brutality and state violence, Vice President Kamala Harris has offered her thoughts on the passing of the 20-year-old Minnesota resident.

"He should be alive today. Folks will keep dying if we don't fully address racial injustice and inequities in our country, from implicit bias to broken systems," the Vice President said.

“Our nation needs justice and healing. And law enforcement must be held to the highest standards of accountability. We know that folks will keep dying if we don’t fully address racial injustice and inequities in our country — from implicit bias to broken systems.”

As her press conference moved forward, Harris drew a direct line between the racism that is exhibited by the police and the discrimination of Black women in the health care system. She referenced how Black woman are more likely to die during pregnancy and how their pain during pregnancy is often ignored.

“We know the primary reasons why: systemic racial inequities and implicit bias,” the Vice President explained.

“Black women deserve to be heard, their voices deserve to be respected. And like all people they must be treated with dignity.”
