Gift giving season is upon us -- and this holiday season, many African Americans are opting to honor Kwanzaa this year over traditional, Christmas celebrations. Kwanzaa takes place from 26th December to 1st January and got it's name from the phrase 'matunda ya kwanza' which means 'first fruits' in Swahili.
The seven principles of the holiday, which was created in 1966 by Professor by Maulana Karenga, are unity; self-determination; collective work and responsibility; co-operative economics; purpose; creativity; and earth. According to tradition, handmade gifts are consistent with the principles of the cultural celebration. Homespun Kwanzaa gifts may include cooking items, food and clothing made from African prints.
When purchasing a gift for your loved ones this Kwanzaa, one thing to note is that culture and community are fundamental components of the special holiday. In the words of Muhammed Ali, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.”
