Gearing up for the release of his new documentary, Grammy award-winning artist Bobby Brown is opening up about his relationship with the late Whitney Houston.

The upcoming film, Biography: Bobby Brown, will dive into the life of the R&B star including regrets he still holds surrounding his former marriage with Houston. Throughout their 14-year marriage, Brown and Houston were seen as a tumultuous pair as they both struggled with crippling addiction.

According to People Magazine, Brown said tensions in their marriage arose when he decided to quit hard drugs while Houston was still using.

"It was really rough because I was so addicted. I had to be put into medical detox first," Brown told People describing the end of his hard drug use. "And then the Bible got me through. It was about becoming healthier for my daughter [Bobbi Kristina] and for the rest of my kids."

Looking back, Brown believes their 2007 split negatively affected Houston's life.

"I think we could have helped each other out," Brown says in the documentary. "I think she'd still be here if we hadn't divorced."

Brown said he was shocked when he found out that the 48-year-old pop princess had died from a drug overdose in 2012.

"I thought she was getting herself together," Brown told People. "I didn't think she would turn back."

The 53-year-old himself has continued to struggle with alcohol addiction despite quitting hard drugs.

Brown said, "I work hard at staying sober every day of my life and it's going to be that way for the rest of my life and I know that."

The A&E documentary Biography: Bobby Brown is set to release on May 30.
