The Denver City Council has approved a $4.72 million settlement over arrests made during Black Lives Matter protests in the wake of George Floyd's death in 2020, per USA Today.
In the lawsuit, plaintiffs accused the Denver Police Department of violating the First, Fourth, and Fourteenth Amendments of protestors who were arrested in 2020.
“The settlement prevents the city from enacting any curfew enforced against those engaged in protest activity in the future,” the protesters’ attorney, Elizabeth Wang, said in a statement. “This is a win that will protect free speech in Denver for the years to come.”
The city of Denver previously awarded $1.6 million dollars to seven protestors who were injured during BLM protests. The city is appealing a separate civil lawsuit that gave $14 million to injured demonstrators.
Denver's latest settlement is among a string of ramifications of police actions during the 2020 protests.
