A 13-year-old teen in Pennsylvania said she feels “regret, guilt, and self-disgust" after stabbing her mother to death during an argument.
Lataya Powell, 13, is facing charges of homicide, aggravated assault, and tampering with evidence in the killing of Tameeka S. Tucker, her 44-year-old mother, per the Citizens Voice.
Police responded to a call at their home on Friday (March 29) and found Tucker with multiple stab wounds in her neck and back and blood gushing from her head. An 11-year-old boy was also stabbed but suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Powell admitted to authorities that she killed her mom.
“I killed my mom, and she’ll never forgive me if she is alive,” Powell told police.
“I don’t have my phone because my mom took it before our fight,” she added.
According to police, Powell stabbed Tucker during an argument before throwing the weapon on her neighbor's doorstep.
A police affidavit states that no knives or cutting instruments were out in plain view, but the kitchen drawers and cabinets were padlocked. Officers found a broken "hasp," a slotted, hinged metal plate that forms part of a fastening that fits over a metal loop and is secured by a padlock, and a padlock lying on the ground.
While being taken into custody, Powell was questioned by a local reporter.
“Any emotion at all?” the reporter asked.
“Regret, guilt, self-disgust,” Powell replied.
Powell is being charged as an adult.
