An Arkansas deputy has been fired after video showed him pretending to point a loaded gun at someone while yelling the N-word.
In a statement, the Yell County Sheriff's Department announced that an unidentified deputy had been terminated after video surfaced of him “engaging in reckless and dangerous actions with what appears to be a loaded firearm” while using “obscene and racist language.”
The deputy was identified as Jaxon Arndt, who had just graduated from a law enforcement training academy in April, per KLRT reporter Neal Zeringue.
In the video, Arndt appeared to be in the passenger seat of a truck when he pointed a handgun at the floor, saying, “Get ready for ole police academy training. Get down you f—in n—r! Stop resisting.”
“We strive to provide an effective and community-driven service to Yell County residents,” Sheriff Nick Gault said in a statement. “Behaviors such as these are not acceptable and will not be tolerated from those in our employ. Actions of this nature are entirely counterproductive to the public trust and support we hold dear.”
In the wake of the incident, Gault said his office will enroll its deputies in mandatory racial discrimination training.
“We hope to continue to provide the best law enforcement service possible to our communities, far from the actions exhibited in this video,” Gault added.
