A West Virginia University fan was caught on video hurling a racist remark toward a Black fan of the University of Pittsburgh as the two football teams faced off for their rivalry game, the Backyard Brawl.

The incident unfolded on September 13 during the WVU and Pittsburgh matchup at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown, West Virginia. Video shows the encounter between a Pittsburgh fan, who is Black, and several WVU fans.

The Pittsburgh fan appeared to taunt his rivals, telling one woman to "fix your makeup."

"Fix your skin color," the woman responded before walking away.

The woman's comment sparked widespread backlash on social media.

“‘Fix your skin color’ is one of the most insane things,” one social media user said.

"It's always good to see people for who they truly are," another person wrote.

"She uses tanning lotion tho 😂😂😂," a third person quipped.

Amid the backlash, the woman who made the remark, identified as 19-year-old Kailey Sheldon, posted an apology on Instagram, claiming there was “never any racist intent” behind her words, per the Daily Mail.

“I realize how incredibly hurtful, offensive, and unacceptable those words were and it’s one of the most arrogant comments I have ever made," Sheldon wrote. “Regardless of my intentions, it carried racist undertones, and I take full accountability for saying them. Words matter, and mine caused harm so for that, I am truly sorry.”

“I don’t stand for racism at all," she added.
