A white man’s racist outburst backfired after the Black man he targeted remained joyful amid the attack.
Video of the incident, shared on Sunday (December 21) by civil rights attorney Lee Merritt, shows a white man hurling slurs at a Black man who was walking outside on a cold, snowy day. Rather than escalating the confrontation, the victim laughed at the man's insults and tossed a snowball toward the harasser.
“The most effective way to overcome hate is to refuse to surrender your joy, even when it runs after you,” Merritt wrote in the Instagram caption accompanying the video.
After being hit by the snowball, the man angrily demanded an explanation and continued shouting racially charged insults. The Black man responded jokingly, quipping that he was simply a “snowball thrower."
The harasser then attempted to accuse the victim of "reverse racism," claiming his race was being used against him. The accusation prompted more laughter from the victim, who eventually walked away, ending the encounter himself.
Social media users widely praised the Black man's response to the harasser's racist outburst.
“They get madder and madder when we don’t react to their bait,” one commenter wrote.
